Supplies Needed
Only a few basic supplies are needed to make these colorful Halloween handprints:
- Non-Toxic Tempera Paint – choose from a variety of colors. Tempera is our preferred option because it gives a brighter finish than washable paint.
- White cardstock – cardstock is recommended because it holds up better than standard paper or construction paper
- Black sharpie or marker- trace around the handprint with a black sharpie to make the design more defined

Directions to Make Halloween Handprint Art
Pumpkin Handprint
Apply green paint to the fingers and orange paint to the palm. Press the painted hand onto white cardstock, leaving the thumb unused. Once the print has dried, add the pumpkin’s face with paint or a drawing tool. Complete the design by tracing the handprint with a black marker or sharpie.
Vampire Handprint
Use black paint on the fingers and a pale beige shade on the palm. Press the hand onto white cardstock, keeping the thumb away from the paper. Once the paint is dry, draw or paint the vampire’s face. Add a red bow and make the ears with a painted fingerprint. Finish by outlining the entire handprint with a black marker or sharpie.
Ghost Handprint
Paint the hand white, then press it onto cardstock. Black cardstock creates a particularly striking contrast with the white print! Once the paint has dried, add the ghost’s face by painting or drawing it. Use a black marker or sharpie to trace around the final handprint.
Frankenstein Handprint
Cover the fingers with black paint and the palm with green paint. Press the hand onto white cardstock, leaving out the thumb. After the print dries, paint or sketch Frankenstein’s face. Add a bolt to each side of his head, then use painted fingerprints to make the ears. Outline the finished handprint with a black marker or sharpie.
Candy Corn Handprint
Paint the top portion of the hand white, the middle section orange, and the bottom section yellow. Press the hand onto white cardstock while keeping the thumb off the page. Trace around the finished design with a black marker or sharpie.
Witch Handprint
Brush black paint over the fingers and green paint over the palm. Press the hand onto white cardstock without including the thumb. Once dry, paint or draw the witch’s face. To give her a gentler appearance, use googly eyes and skip the eyebrows. Add the witch’s hat and hair, then outline the handprint with a black marker or sharpie.
Monster Handprint
Make the handprint with purple, red, or orange paint. Let it dry, then add white fingerprint dots for the eyes. After the white paint has set, place black circles in the center of the eyes. Add a small white dot inside each black circle and draw on a smile. Trace the finished handprint with a black marker or Sharpie.
Bat Handprint
Paint both hands black and press them onto white cardstock, positioning them so they overlap as shown. Let the paint dry fully, then add two yellow eyes and white teeth. Trace around the handprint with a black marker or Sharpie. Outline the eyes, too, and finish each one with a black dot in the center.
Zombie Handprint
Use green paint to make the handprint. After it has dried thoroughly, paint the eyes yellow and add pink cheeks. Brush red marks around the handprint and draw on a cheerful smile. Add stitch accents with a black marker, then trace the entire handprint with the marker or a Sharpie. Finish by outlining the eyes and adding a black dot to the center of each one.
