American Flag-Inspired Patriotic Sugar Wafers
Once set, these cookies are simple to carry in an airtight container or sealed bag. For gifts, place them individually in cello bags.

How to Make Patriotic Sugar Wafers
1. Melt the chocolate wafers.
Place the red, white, and blue candy melts in three separate bowls. Warm each color according to the package directions, stirring until completely smooth.
Tip: Set your microwave to 50% power when melting the chocolate to help prevent scorching. You may also warm it in short bursts, stirring after each interval. Regular stirring breaks up any remaining pieces and helps keep the chocolate from overheating.
2. Pour the chocolate into bags.
Use a spoon to fill the icing bags with melted chocolate, then cut a tiny opening at the end of each bag.
A Ziploc bag can be used instead.
3. Attach two wafer cookies.
Pipe a line of melted white chocolate along the long side of one wafer cookie. Place a second wafer beside it, pressing the two together while keeping them flat on the work surface as the chocolate firms up.
4. Form the blue rectangle.
Pipe the melted blue chocolate into a small rectangle. Make it as wide as one wafer cookie and about 6 grid lines long, or just under one-third of the cookie’s total length.
Fill the blue outline completely with melted blue chocolate.
While the blue chocolate is still soft, sprinkle the white sprinkles over the entire area.
5. Pipe on the stripes.
Follow the wafer’s grid pattern to position the red stripes. Pipe red melted chocolate across the cookie, keeping each stripe one grid line wide and leaving an unfilled line between them for the white stripes.
Let the red chocolate firm up for about 30 seconds, then add the white stripes.
Pipe white chocolate into the spaces that remain.
6. (Optional) Package the cookies in favor bags.
For party favor bags, print and cut out the bag toppers. Find the printable bag toppers here.
Fold each topper along its center crease.
Cut the white card stock into 4″ by 6″ rectangles so they fit inside the clear cello bags, then place one piece of card stock into each bag.
Place the cooled cookies in the transparent cello bags, then seal the bags with the self-adhesive strip along the top.
Set the bag topper “tents” across the top edge of each clear cello bag, then staple both sides securely to keep the toppers attached.
They’re ready to enjoy and serve!
How many flags can be made with one package of vanilla wafers?
Each flag cookie uses 2 wafers, so a package containing 30 vanilla wafers is enough to prepare 15 flag wafers.
Can the wafers remain out overnight?
Cookies left uncovered overnight can turn stale and lose their fresh taste. Store them in an airtight container, a Ziploc bag, or sealed cello bags instead.
What is the easiest and quickest way to decorate them?
- Begin by decorating each wafer pair with the blue chocolate and sprinkles.
- Next, add the red stripes to all the wafers, then finish with the white stripes.
- Working in this order means you won’t need to repeatedly remelt the chocolate, making the decorating process faster.
- Place the red, white, and blue candy melts into three separate bowls. Melt each color according to the package instructions, stirring until smooth.
- Spoon the melted chocolate into icing bags and cut a small tip from the end of each bag.

- While the blue coating is still soft, immediately sprinkle the white sprinkles across it.
- Use the wafer’s grid pattern to space the red stripes. Pipe the melted red chocolate across the width of one gridline, leaving one line uncovered between each stripe for the white chocolate. Let the red chocolate firm up for about 30 seconds before piping the white stripes.
- Pipe the white chocolate into the remaining stripes. Allow the decorations to set completely for about 30 minutes, or extend the setting time if needed.
