How to Make a Giant Bubble Wand
You only need a few easy-to-find hardware store supplies to make your own giant bubble wand. This simple DIY activity gives children the chance to create bubbles that are wonderfully large.
What You’ll Need
For the giant bubble wand:
- 2 screw hooks
- washers (or another small, round weight)
- 2 wooden rods
- cotton cord
For the giant bubble mixture:
- 6 cups water
- 1.5 cups dish soap (Dawn dish soap is our preferred option, but another high-quality dish soap can also be used – avoid natural varieties)
- 1/4 cup glycerin (food grade)
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- large container – for mixing and storing the bubble solution

How to Make a Giant Bubble Wand
1. Attach the screw hooks.
Begin by twisting one screw hook into the top end of each wooden rod.
2. Cut two pieces of string.
Cut two cord lengths, making sure one is longer than the other. The longer piece will hang below and hold the washer or other weight. Aim for one piece measuring approximately 3.5 feet and the other about 5.5 feet. The measurements do not have to be exact, as long as there is a noticeable difference between the two lengths.
3. Tie the shorter cord to the screw hooks.
4. Add the washers to the longer cord.
Slide the washers onto the long piece of cord. Use just enough weight to allow the cord to drop naturally toward the ground.
5. Tie the longer cord to the screw hooks.
Your giant bubble wand is now complete and should look similar to this:
You will need a giant bubble solution to use with the wand. Make your own mixture or choose a ready-made option. Glycerin gives the bubbles extra strength, helping them last longer before they pop. You could also experiment with making bouncing bubbles.
How to Make the Giant Bubble Mixture
- Pour 6 cups of water, 1.5 cups of dish soap (Dawn is our favorite), 1/4 cup of food-grade glycerin and 1 tbsp. of baking powder into a container.
- Mix the ingredients thoroughly and let the solution rest overnight, allowing the glycerin to fully work through the mixture.
Note: We recommend avoiding grass when using the full container of bubble solution. If a large amount spills, the concentrated mixture may harm the lawn. Using a small amount for a few bubbles should be fine; for larger batches, place the container on a driveway or sidewalk instead.
